We are seeking a Project Assistant to be based at our Cnoc Soilleir campus to support delivery of the Barra and Harris Unearthed project.

Barra & Harris Unearth Project:

Barra and Harris Unearthed builds on the learnings, expertise and experiences gained from a previous successful project, the Uist Virtual Archaeological Project: https://linktr.ee/uistunearthed. Expanding on concepts developed in this previous project, Barra and Harris Unearthed will create six augmented reality (AR) reconstructions of archaeological sites and other audiovisual content – three in Barra, and three in Harris, informed by archaeological research. All digital content will be accessed by smart devices via an app. A digital overlay of information on users’ surroundings will be ‘triggered’ by landscape locations at the six sites. Through the app, visitors will access detailed bilingual textual and audiovisual information about the sites and their history. The AR reconstructions will be complemented by a multimedia experience to be installed in local museums and other spaces across the Outer Hebrides and further afield. The project is supported by Historic Environment Scotland, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, The National Lottery Heritage Project, the SSEN Transmission’s Regional Community Benefit Fund, and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. It will run from July 2025 – July 2028.

Responsibilities: The post holders will be responsible for carrying out desk-based research required for the successful development and delivery of the augmented reality smart device app and the mixed media exhibitions. You will liase with app developers to ensure accurate archaeological information is communicated through reconstructions and consult community groups and local schools during product development workshops.

Qualifications, Experience and Skills: The suitable candidates will hold a Degree level qualification in Archaeology. You will have experience of working with community groups and archaeology or heritage sectors. You should have excellent communication, organisational and research and analytical skills. Knowledge and understanding of Scottish Archaeology is essential.

A level of Gaelic ability would be advantageous to your application.
