Role Overview
We are seeking a Mental Health Support Worker to provide direct support to students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), including Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting students’ wellbeing, building resilience, and ensuring they are fully included in all aspects of college life.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide one-to-one and small group emotional support to students with SEND.
• Develop personalised support strategies to help students manage anxiety, stress, and low mood.
• Work alongside teaching staff, pastoral staff, and external professionals to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
• Implement interventions that build students’ coping mechanisms, self-esteem, and confidence.
• Support students in attending and engaging with lessons, workshops, and enrichment activities.
• Monitor, record, and report on students’ progress and wellbeing, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with safeguarding procedures.
• Assist with the creation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and contribute to EHCP reviews.
• Respond calmly and effectively to crises, de-escalating situations with empathy and professionalism.
• Signpost students and families to external services where additional specialist help is required.
Desired Skills and Experience
• Experience supporting young people with mental health needs, ideally within an educational or SEND setting.
• Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and child protection.
• Understanding of SEND and SEMH-related conditions (e.g., Autism, ADHD, anxiety, trauma-related challenges).
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to individual student needs.
• A caring, empathetic, and resilient approach.
• Relevant qualifications in mental health, youth work, or education are desirable but not essential. Training will be provided.
