We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.

We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!

Your role:

As a Maintenance Assistant at Leigh Sports Village, you’ll be part of a hands-on team delivering reactive and planned maintenance across a major stadium and leisure complex. Supporting the Facilities Manager, you’ll carry out essential repairs, respond to live operational issues, and help prepare the site for matchdays, events, and daily public use. This is a customer-facing role requiring teamwork, independence, and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment. You’ll work closely with stadium staff and partners like Manchester United and Leigh Leopards, receiving full support and direction from the Facilities leadership team.

About you:

You’re a flexible, committed and proactive individual with general building or site maintenance experience, ideally gained within a stadium, sports venue, or large public site. You’re confident working both independently and within a team and can respond quickly and calmly to live operational issues, particularly on matchdays and during events. You’ll need to be comfortable working outdoors and across all areas of a stadium complex, including early mornings, evenings and weekends. A practical approach, strong communication skills, and a working knowledge of health and safety will all support your success in this varied, high-profile environment.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.

Leigh Sports Village is one of the UK’s premier community sports and events complexes, home to Manchester United Women, Leigh Leopards, and a wide range of elite, grassroots, and community events. The site includes a 12,000-capacity stadium, elite training facilities, and public sports amenities. Our Facilities Team is central to ensuring the venue remains clean, safe, and fully operational 365 days a year. You’ll join a hardworking, supportive team who take pride in delivering high standards. This role offers variety, responsibility, development opportunities, and the chance to support a venue enjoyed by thousands every week.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community.
