Job summary

The DCMS Commercial directorate is a dynamic team with a positive and friendly culture. We prioritise kindness and respect, and we work closely together as a team to embrace change and drive continuous improvement.

DCMS Commercial is unique - we deliver the classic portfolio of ‘commercial’ services such as procurement, contract management and supplier engagement, as well as providing the department with a niche set of services such as negotiating with foreign investors, mergers and acquisitions, policy development and income generation.

We act as strategic delivery partners to the department, and our work secures good value for the taxpayer, drives growth and ensures DCMS remains productive and agile.

Our size means we’re flexible - we all lean-in to support the priorities of the day at the same time as maintaining a brilliant core service to our customers.

We place great emphasis on engaging positively with our colleagues and stakeholders, which we believe creates a great working environment.

Job description

We’re seeking a Commercial Manager to join our team. You’ll be based in either our Manchester or London hub.

You’ll work across a number of workstreams and projects, enabling DCMS to deliver its mission by providing a great commercial service.

No two days will be the same working across the whole commercial lifecycle - you’ll engage effectively with stakeholders and customers, input and analyse data, and create insight reports that will enable our senior leaders to maintain strategic oversight of the department’s commercial activity. You’ll work as part of a team, as well as having distinct areas of responsibility of your own. You’ll support the delivery of complex commercial activity and, with experience, lead the delivery of lower-risk procurements. Your work will help the department to secure good value and comply with procurement regulations.

You’ll be inquisitive and keen to learn new skills, and in return we can provide you with the learning and development you need to develop your career in commercial and in the Civil Service.

Person specification

The ideal candidate would have the following key skills and experience.

Essential requirements:

  • Strong communication and engagement skills, both written and verbal, with experience of building and maintaining positive relationships with stakeholders and/or customers in ways they understand.
  • Attention to detail with the ability to scrutinise data and share relevant insights and recommendations with colleagues.
  • A strong team player with the ability to work autonomously and take responsibility for delivering activities that sit within your specific areas of responsibility.
  • Open and able to react to changing priorities with positivity and innovation.

Desirable skills:

  • Experience of working in a commercial or procurement setting, either in a public sector commercial department or in a private sector setting where you have experienced buying or selling goods and services, securing value for money and/or achieving good commercial outcomes.
  • Project management and administration experience.
