Position: Lead/Senior Commissioning Engineer (National Grid)
Project: National Grid HV Substation Control System Replacement
Location: West Ham - London
Contract Length: Starts 06/10 til end of Jan 2026
Contract Type: Outside IR35

Role Overview

The Lead/Senior Commissioning Engineer will be responsible for supporting the planning, managing, and executing all commissioning activities associated with the replacement of HV substation control and protection systems as per National Grid standards & Regulations. This role ensures that the upgraded systems are installed, tested, and commissioned safely, on time, and in compliance with all technical, safety, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate commissioning activities on site for substation control system replacement projects (CTs, VTs, Controls, Protection relays etc.).

  • Alongside the TP141 help develop and review commissioning plans, test procedures, and method statements.

  • Supervise site commissioning actvitives, ensuring adherence to project schedules and safety standards.

  • Act as the on-site authority for all commissioning activities co-ordinating with the TP141 Commissioning Engineer overseeing the works.

  • Carry out system integration, functional testing, and performance validation of new and modified control systems.

  • Ensure compliance with client specifications, grid codes, and industry standards (IEC, IEEE, ENA).

  • Manage and maintain commissioning documentation, test records, and handover packs.

  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for commissioning activities, liaising with project stakeholders, equipment vendors, and the client.

  • Lead fault-finding and troubleshooting during commissioning and energisation stages.

  • Ensure health, safety, and environmental requirements are implemented during commissioning works.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree / HND in Electrical or Power Engineering (or equivalent experience).

  • Hold National Grid Persons Ticket

  • Minimum 5 years experience in commissioning of HV substations (132kV-400kV preferred).

  • Proven track record in control & protection system replacement or upgrade projects.

  • Experience in Lead/Senior commissioning roles and managing subcontractors/vendors.

  • Familiarity with client utility standards and grid code compliance.

  • Strong documentation and reporting skills.
