The Department You will join a well-established cardiology unit within a tailor made cardiology suite including purpose built cardiac catheterisation laboratory. We have an 8 bed coronary care unit, 16 general cardiology beds, and a 6 bed cardiology day ward. You will join a team of 6 consultant cardiologists with varying subspecialty interests including imaging, cardiac device therapy, and coronary intervention (PCI procedures are undertaken at Sheffield). We also have visiting consultants undertaking complex device implantation at Rotherham from the regional network. Local procedures include coronary angiography, right heart catheterisation, simple and complex cardiac device implantation, transthoracic echo, transoesophaegeal echo, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy and cardiac CT imaging. Other medical team members include a second speciality doctor, two Cardiology STR posts with training numbers, a junior cardiology fellow, a foundation year doctor, three resident doctors in training, a part-time hospital practitioner in cardiology, a consultant cardiac clinician scientist, and a consultant radiologist with interest in cardiac imaging. We are supported by two part-time hospital based heart failure nurses, a hospital arrhythmia nurse, an advanced nurse practitioner, and a team of highly specialised cardiac physiologists, echo-sonographers and ECG technicians. There is further team of cardiac specialist nurses and a cardiac physiotherapist based in the community for heart failure and cardiac rehabilitation. The cardiology suite at Rotherham Hospital, adjacent to the coronary care unit, comprises a state of the art catheterisation/pacing lab, echocardiography rooms, rapid access chest pain clinics, exercise treadmill testing, tilt-table testing, and full ambulatory ECG monitoring fitting and analysis, as well as consultant offices and a shared middle grade doctors office. Nearby to the main cardiology suite is our cardiac device suite from which a physiologist-led implantable loop recorder service is run, plus permanent pacemaker, cardiac resynchronisation therapy and internal cardioverter defibrillator patients are pre-assessed and followed up with full optimisation service. The cardiology department has close links with other specialties and with regional cardiology/cardiothoracic colleagues. We have a fortnightly MDT meeting with interventional cardiology and cardiothoracic colleagues at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield, weekly MDT meetings for cardiac rhythm management, cardiac MRI imaging, infective endocarditis, and four-weekly heart failure MDT meeting with community colleagues. The Post This is a non-training full time specialty doctor post in Cardiology based at Rotherham General Hospital. Whilst the post is not recognised for training, the successful candidate will gain experience in all aspects of non-interventional cardiology and have extensive exposure to the management of acute and elective cardiac conditions. There is no commitment to general medical on call. The primary clinical responsibilities of the post holder are: Provide senior cardiology support for inpatients and outpatients under the care of the cardiology consultants. Assist with patient review and management on the coronary care unit, inpatient cardiology ward and outlying cardiology patients and referrals Provide a role in the supervision and training of the Foundation and Resident doctors in the team, helping with the safe management and effective discharge of patients To see cardiology referrals from other specialties and discuss management with seniors as necessary Take share in holding the cardiology Dect phone to provide urgent advise or review during working hours To attend MDT meetings and liaise with other specialties for onward referrals To provide supervision for certain cardiology procedures and investigations such as ETT, Myoview scans, CT coronary angiograms, DC cardioversions and contrast endocardiograms Undertake outpatient clinics including general cardiology and rapid access chest pain clinics To carry out teaching when required, including for medical undergraduates from Sheffield University Participating in medical grand round, clinical effectiveness and mortality and morbidity meetings Attending to clinical administration in a timely manner, including dictation of consultations, reporting of investigations, signing of letters and responding to queries from members of the cardiology team or primary care Being flexible within their job description to assist with duties due to unplanned absence of colleagues In due course participate in providing cardiology review and expediting the management of inpatients at weekends (which will result in an increase in programmed activity and remuneration)
