Location: Guildhall 2, Royal Borough of Kingston
Contract: 19 October 2025 – Initially for 3 months and likely to be extended
Hours: 48 per week | Monday–Friday, 09:00–19:00
Rate: £19.17 PAYE / £25.74 Umbrella

The Royal Borough of Kingston is seeking a fully qualified and food-competent Environmental Health Officer to provide vital cover during a period of long-term staff absence. This is a high-impact, independent role focused on food hygiene and standards inspections across a range of premises.

About the Role
You’ll be responsible for conducting 120–150 food hygiene and standards inspections over a 3-month period, covering low to high-risk premises. You’ll provide clear inspection reports, issue Food Hygiene Rating Scheme scores, and offer legal and best practice advice to food business operators. Timely documentation and escalation of serious issues are key to success in this role.

Key Responsibilities
Independently carry out food hygiene and standards inspections

Provide written reports and ratings under the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme

Return inspection paperwork within 48 hours for database entry

Undertake revisits and escalate serious concerns to the Lead Officer

Liaise professionally with food business operators and council colleagues

Ensure compliance with Health & Safety procedures when working alone

Essential Requirements
BSc, MSc, or Diploma in Environmental Health, registered with EHORB or equivalent

Higher Certificate in Food Control (HCFC) or Advanced Professional Certificate in Food Hygiene and Standards Control (APC-Food)

Recent experience (within last 2 years) as a Food Inspector

Ability to inspect all risk levels and work independently, including out-of-hours

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Detailed knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, and codes of practice
