Maths Co-Ordinator and Teacher - Birchfield School

Overview:
The Teacher role will focus on teaching Mathematics in Key Stage 2, with the
possibility of working with other year groups and subjects as needed. In addition, as
Head of Mathematics, the postholder will oversee the subject across the Pre-Prep
and Prep departments and work closely with the Mathematics Lead in the Senior
School. The role reports to the Head of Prep.

We are looking for someone who not only brings a passion for Mathematics and
teaching but also a genuine commitment to the wellbeing and safety of our pupils. As with all roles at Birchfield, this position carries the responsibility of supporting the
school’s safeguarding and child protection policies, promoting online safety, and
ensuring every child is given the care, encouragement and opportunities they need to thrive.

Main Responsibilities as Head of Department:
• Oversee planning and progression across relevant year groups to ensure
strong subject coverage and high expectations.
• Monitor and analyse pupil outcomes, identifying learners in need of
intervention, planning for improvement, and tracking progress.
• Champion innovative teaching and maintain high standards through a unified
whole-school approach to Mathematics.
• Lead preparation for external examinations/scholarships as relevant,
supporting colleagues in the department’s delivery.

Responsibilities as a Teacher:
• Plan, prepare, and deliver stimulating, challenging, and well-differentiated
Maths lessons, ensuring extension and consolidation as required.
• Mark and assess pupils’ work in accordance with School policy, ensuring
feedback supports pupil progress.
• Be attentive to pupils’ emotional and physical welfare; ensure their safety in
all classroom and school activities.
• Act as first contact for parents, staff and pupils regarding welfare, behaviour,
academic progress; keep Headmistress / DSL informed of emerging concerns.
• Take responsibility for pastoral care of pupils in the class (form), including
supporting their personal development, and work with parents and carers in
partnership.
• Participate in parents’ evenings, maintain classroom displays and ensure the
learning environment supports pupil achievement.
• Keep up to date with curriculum developments, pedagogical best practice,
assessment, and the national expectation in Mathematics.

Safeguarding & KCSIE 2025 Specific Requirements:
• All staff must read Part One of KCSIE 2025 (or Annex A if applicable) and
keep up to date with statutory safeguarding guidance.
• Understand and follow the school’s Child Protection Policy, Code of
Conduct, Online Safety Policy, and recognise signs of abuse, neglect, or harm,
including child-on-child abuse.
• Be familiar with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and Deputies, know
how to make referrals to Local Authority Children’s Social Care, the Police,
or Channel Programme where radicalisation concerns arise.
• Participate in safeguarding training at induction, refresher training (at least
every two years), and regular updates (online safety, filtering & monitoring,
Prevent) as required under KCSIE 2025
• Promote online safety, understand the school’s filtering and monitoring
responsibilities, report any concerns about pupils’ electronic behaviour or
exposure to inappropriate content.
• Ensure awareness of attendance being a safeguarding issue, escalate repeated
or unexplained absences as required.

Recruitment & Professional Conduct:
• This role is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act; an enhanced
DBS check with barred list information is required. Verification of identity,
eligibility to work in the UK, and overseas criminal record checks (where
applicable) must be completed.
• The candidate must sign the Staff Code of Conduct and Behaviour Policy, and
agree to comply with all safeguarding, online safety, and child protection
procedures.
• The postholder is expected to model professional behaviour, maintain
confidentiality, demonstrate positive attitude and integrity, and promote
equality, diversity, and inclusion.

Flexibility:
• Undertake additional duties reasonably required by the Headmistress
consistent with the role.
• Contribute to whole school events, meetings, and initiatives that support the
school’s aims.

Line Management & Reporting:
• Report to the Head of Prep.
• Work collaboratively with leadership team, DSL, Senior Management,
SENCo, Computing Lead, and other staff to drive the subject and meet
safeguarding obligations.
