Primary Purpose of role
As a permanent member of the Defra tax team, you will play a lead role in the provision of VAT expertise for Defra, including leading on the VAT return and providing VAT help and guidance across Defra. You will also work with the wider tax team on taxable benefits, corporation tax and IR35 compliance, including providing help and advice to other bodies within the Defra group as necessary.
Job Summary/key responsibilities
Ensure Defra’s VAT returns are submitted to HMRC on time and that controls are in place to ensure the accuracy of VAT.
Carry out monthly VAT checks and ensure information/advice is communicated back to the business.
Keep all VAT related guidance up to date and ensure training needs within the business are met.
Provide advice and assistance to the business, particularly on complex VAT matters.
Assist with data gathering and checking returns for the PAYE Settlement Agreement, alongside ensuring compliance on all taxable benefits.
Assist with Defra’s IR35 compliance.
Work with the wider tax team on all other areas of Defra’s tax, providing help and advice to other bodies in the Defra group as needed.
Liaise with HMRC and the cross-government Tax Centre of Excellence as required, including leading on HMRC VAT audits.
Liaise with key stakeholders and provide information to senior staff.
Represent Defra’s interest in finance systems upgrades as required.
