The Department of Anaesthesia at Homerton Hospital developed as a satellite service from the Department of Anaesthesia at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1986. Over the years it has evolved and is now an independent department with a dynamic, young team of dedicated anaesthetists within the SWNS directorate. Good links with the Barts Health NHS Trust are maintained, with some consultants working across sites. We are the first department in the UK to gain service accreditation under the Royal College of Anaesthetists ACSA scheme in August 2014, 2018 and 2023.

The department is situated in new purpose-built accommodation, which is conveniently part of the main theatre complex and provides a large seminar room, for departmental presentations, meetings and with workstations for trainees. There is office space for consultants, with dedicated pc access fully networked to the hospital IT system. There is a PowerPoint data projection system, and overhead projection facilities. There is also a frequently updated selection of textbooks. The department has full-time secretarial support.
