Crynodeb

Never has there been a more important time for trees and forests to help tackle the climate emergency and provide a much-needed sanctuary for people and wildlife.

The Forestry Commission is the government department responsible for protecting, expanding, and promoting the sustainable management of woodlands, while increasing their value to society and the environment. By joining the Forestry Commission, you will become part of a team of passionate, committed colleagues, and be able to build on a wealth of expertise to take this ambitious work forward. You will be able to make your mark by helping the Forestry Commission to revolutionise how we work together and reach new stakeholders.

We are seeking well-motivated individuals with skills and experience relevant to environmental policy, the delivery of grant based incentives and who are passionate about sustainable forest management and positive land use change.

We are recruiting for one role within Forestry Commission’s Environmental Land Management (ELM) team which focuses on the design and delivery of three schemes within Defra’s Farming and Countryside Programme. These schemes are the Sustainable Farming Incentive, Countryside Stewardship, and Landscape Recovery.

The post will work on enhancing and expanding the ELM grant offer to maximise the outcomes for forestry and for the environment; the role will initially focus on Countryside Stewardship but has the potential to work on other incentives schemes in the future.

Working in the Environmental Land Management team requires Forestry Commission cross-team working and maintaining close working relationships with core Defra teams, Arm’s Length Body (ALB) delivery partners, and stakeholders working on the development of the forestry elements of the schemes.

The ELM Manager will:

  • Support the ELM Development Managers in representing FC at cross-Defra meetings on the policy, design and implementation of the relevant grant schemes and seeking to maximise forestry/woodland outcomes.
  • Provide feedback to the Environmental Land Management Development Managers relating to risks, issues and progress, and use professional judgement to escalate issues accordingly.
  • Provide support for engagement and communications activities with stakeholders (internal and external) regarding Environmental Land Management.
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) within the Forest Commission, DEFRA Policy and ALBs to ensure the content of all three schemes reflects up to date forestry policy and deliver against government targets.
  • Use subject matter expertise to support delivery teams by: answering queries and producing guidance / technical training materials related to ELM grant schemes.
  • Iteratively improve elements of the Farming and Countryside (FCP) grant offer.
