Job Title: Imam
Reports to: Religious Committee
Location: Jami Mosque and Islamic Centre, 521-527 Coventry Road, Birmingham, B10 0LL
Working Hours: Full-time (including evenings/weekends as required)
Contract Type: Permanent
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience and qualifications
Main Purpose of the Role
The Imam will be responsible for leading the religious, spiritual, and educational activities at Jami Mosque and Islamic Centre. The ideal candidate will be a well-rounded scholar with strong leadership and interpersonal skills, capable of inspiring and engaging the diverse Muslim community in Birmingham.
Key Responsibilities
Lead the five daily prayers, Jumu’ah, Taraweeh (during Ramadan), Eid prayers, and other congregational services.
Deliver Jumu’ah Khutbahs and public talks in a clear, engaging, and authentic manner.
Provide Islamic guidance and counselling to individuals and families.
Conduct Islamic classes (Qur’an, Fiqh, Seerah, etc.) for children, youth, and adults.
Officiate Nikahs (Islamic marriages), Janazahs (funeral rites), and other religious ceremonies.
Mentor and engage youth to foster their Islamic identity and moral development.
Participate in interfaith and community events representing the mosque with professionalism and respect.
Support the mosque committee in planning religious and educational programs.
Promote unity, inclusivity, and mutual respect within the congregation.
Person Specification
Essential:
Recognised Islamic qualification (e.g., from Al-Azhar, Darul Uloom, Islamic University of Madinah, etc.).
Deep knowledge of Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh, and contemporary Islamic issues.
Fluent in English and Arabic (or both).
Strong public speaking, teaching, and interpersonal skills.
Proven experience working as an Imam or religious leader.
Good character, moral integrity, and respect for all schools of thought.
Desirable:
Hafiz of the Qur’an.
Experience working with youth and diverse communities.
IT literacy (for delivering online classes or social media engagement).
Familiarity with UK laws relating to religious institutions and safeguarding.
