Summary

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

This is a permanent role to commence as soon as possible.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

There are 2 10PA consultant posts which could be either full or part time flexible working. You will work across all areas of the pathway, from hyper acute management for local stroke admissions, inpatient referrals and regional cases for mechanical thrombectomy and decompressive hemicraniectomy, to inpatient stroke care, including rehabilitation.

You will lead the multidisciplinary team which includes stroke advanced care practitioners, nursing staff, specialist physio, occupational and speech and language therapy, orthoptists and neuropsychology. There are daily TIA clinics which the consultant will run or supervise, and monthly stroke follow up clinics.

In addition, the department has a strong educational record of teaching undergraduate medical students from the University of Southampton with small tutorial groups, and bedside teaching as well as postgraduate training for resident doctors including weekly stroke journal club meetings and support in preparation for assessments such as the MRCP exam.

As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.

We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.

Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.

We are looking for an experienced enthusiastic colleague with good interpersonal skills to come and join our dynamic and innovative tertiary stroke service at University Hospital Southampton.

We are one of the leading neuroscience centres in the UK having started a 24/7 mechanical thrombectomy service in March 2025. We have already treated 250 patients this year, with over 400 predicted by the end of the year and performed the 3rd highest number of procedures nationwide in the spring.

We admit 1400 stroke patients a year and provide on site 08:00 – 20:00 consultant support 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and on call from home 20:00 -08:00 on an 1:20 rota between 7 stroke physicians and 11 neurologists. We have a 13 bed HASU and 28 bed Acute Stroke and Rehabilitation Ward, F8.

Recent innovations include the prehospital video triage to enhance and improve thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy treatment times and our same day post thrombectomy repatriation policy has gained national recognition and been replicated in other centres.

We are a Hyper acute Stroke Research Centre (HSRC) and have contributed to recent major multicentre randomised controlled trials including ATTEST 2, OPTIMAS and ESCAPE-MeVO which have directly changed clinical practice.

The UHS stroke service is innovative, flexible, ambitious, and high achieving. This post provides the opportunity for like-minded and enthusiastic colleagues to join us and contribute to our exciting plans.
