Role: Senior Quantity Surveyor
Project: HV Substation Civils Construction
Contract Type: Contract - Outside IR35
Start Date: ASAP
Contract Length: 5 months with likelihood of extension

Role Purpose

The Senior Quantity Surveyor (SQS) will play a key role in managing the commercial and contractual aspects of a major high-voltage substation civils construction project. The role requires strong knowledge of NEC4 contracts, effective cost control, and the ability to manage subcontractors, variations, and client interfaces to ensure the project is delivered profitably, on time, and in compliance with contractual obligations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the commercial management of the HV substation civils project throughout its lifecycle.

  • Administer NEC4 contracts, including early warnings, compensation events, change control, and payment processes.

  • Prepare, monitor, and maintain accurate cost reports, forecasts, and cash flow projections.

  • Manage subcontractor procurement, negotiation, and administration (including assessment of variations, valuations, and payments).

  • Ensure timely preparation and agreement of interim and final accounts.

  • Work closely with project managers, engineers, and planners to support project delivery and identify risks/opportunities.

  • Provide clear and concise commercial reports to senior leadership and stakeholders.

  • Support dispute avoidance and resolution, escalating commercial issues where necessary.

  • Contribute to value engineering, cost-saving initiatives, and commercial risk management.

  • Ensure compliance with company governance, health & safety, and industry best practices.

Requirements

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, or Civil Engineering.

  • 7+ years' experience in quantity surveying, with at least 3+ years in a senior QS role.

  • Proven track record on civils infrastructure projects, preferably in power, utilities, or energy sectors.

  • Strong working knowledge of NEC4 contracts.

  • Experience in managing subcontractors and supply chain commercially.

  • Excellent financial management, cost control, and forecasting skills.

  • Confident in handling change management and claims.

  • Strong IT skills (Excel, Cemar, Causeway, or similar contract/cost management systems).

  • Professional membership (MRICS / working towards chartership) desirable.
