The Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO) is a specialist and independent role within the local authority, providing authoritative oversight of allegations against adults working with children. As a key leader within the Practice Improvement and Development Service, the LADO offers professional challenge where necessary, including escalating concerns to senior management both within and outside the local authority.
This role requires a confident, authoritative professional with the status and expertise equivalent to an experienced children’s social work team manager, as outlined in statutory guidance (IRO Handbook). The LADO is expected to drive practice improvement, promote safeguarding excellence, and provide leadership across the entire Children’s Services Department and the wider multi-agency partnership.
