This is an excellent opportunity to join our first class paediatric intensive care team based at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. We are a busy, friendly department fully accredited for training in Intensive Care Medicine.

The St Mary’s Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is one of the leading units in the sector and the only unit offering level 3 general intensive care in the North-West London region. The PICU is one of five airborne and two contact high consequence infectious disease centres in the United Kingdom situated within a Major Trauma Centre. The PICU works closely with the High Dependency Unit (Apollo) at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital as part of West London Children’s Healthcare.

Applicants must have full GMC registration and be trained in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine or equivalent and have the required experience and training in managing critically ill children. Applicants must be included on the GMC’s Specialist Register or be within 6 months of CCT (CCT) or have equivalent training with evidence of sign-off (Portfolio pathway doctors must be on the specialist register at the point of application) by the date of interview.

This is a whole time, 10PA consultant NHS appointment at St. Mary’s Hospital, London. The Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at St Mary’s has 11 intensive care beds and 4 High Dependency beds.

Modalities of treatment offered include invasive ventilation, HFOV, non-invasive ventilation (both positive and negative pressure), pharmacological cardiovascular support, haemofiltration and peritoneal dialysis. The Department is a partner with Great Ormond Street Hospital, and the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals in a combined North London retrieval service, CATS, to which it contributes consultant, middle grade and nursing staff.

Services on site include paediatric surgery, a highly regarded national and international paediatric haematology and bone marrow transplant programme, infectious diseases and one of the leading paediatric allergy and immunology units in the United Kingdom. The hospital has a busy emergency department and is one of 4 Major Trauma Centres for children and adults in London.

The unit cares for children with life threatening conditions including major trauma, severe infections, airway and respiratory problems, neurological conditions and those who have undergone surgery. Medical services supported include acute emergency paediatrics, respiratory medicine, allergy and immunology, rheumatology, haematology, oncology, neurology, and surgery. The PICU is one of 5 airborne and 2 contact high consequence infectious disease centres in the United Kingdom.

The post holder will be expected to provide high quality care to patients in the Paediatric Intensive Care, and to provide outreach services to children at risk of deterioration in the inpatient paediatric areas at St Mary’s Hospital. They will also contribute to the research, teaching and training activities on the Intensive Care unit, including providing educational and clinical supervision. The post holder will work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure the continued high performance of the intensive care unit and will share responsibility for junior staff management. They will be expected to participate in governance activities and strategy and business planning activities of the department. The post holder will need to demonstrate excellent leadership skills. They will be expected to undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of their patients. The post holder must be available by telephone and be able to attend the hospital within approximately 30 minutes when on call. The post holder will be expected to participate in the appraisal process and relevant continuous medical education. The post holder will be required to participate in clinical care of patients with high consequence infectious diseases.
