To assist with the daily running of the sections to which you have been assigned in the laboratory providing a multidisciplinary service to all users. To provide general support in other disciplines of the laboratory including On-Call To maintain the highest professional and technical standards in the department. Main Duties: To include, but not be restricted to, the following duties: To maintain the highest standards of quality within the department at all times. To undertake such work as you are assigned in a careful and efficient way and in compliance with current regulatory standards, regulatory requirements, the TDL Quality Management System. To follow local procedures (SOPs) and to maintain technical competence in all sections. To perform Haematology, Coagulation and other related tests accurately and efficiently. To perform Blood Transfusion tests and procedures accurately and efficiently. To perform Biochemistry, Immunoassay tests and other related tests accurately and efficiently. To maintain Blood Transfusion stock levels and records and monitor usage to ensure efficient use. To undertake general housekeeping including stock and waste management. To prepare, store and use reagents and dispose of reagents as according to COSHH, using departmental resources efficiently. To replace stocks of consumables and reagents when required and monitor minimum stock levels. Undertake routine cleaning and maintenance of laboratory equipment and benches. To handle, use and dispose of blood (and other body fluids or tissues) and hazardous chemicals in a safe manner as according to COSHH. To use the Laboratory information system as according to local procedures (SOPs). To maintain the integrity and accuracy of laboratory databases. Registering specimens in the laboratory information management system (LIMS) and preparing samples for analysis and/or presentation to analysers, assigning laboratory numbers and carrying out clerical and technical tasks in accordance with sample handling procedures. To maintain equipment including start-up and shut-down procedures, running controls and calibration, as well as ensuring equipment is functioning correctly prior to analysis, to achieve the optimum instrument performance and maintain a clean and safe working environment To carry out troubleshooting procedures when required and informing the senior BMS of situations requiring further action. To perform manual, semi-automated and fully-automated laboratory investigations. To evaluate results for credibility and inform the Consultant Pathologist and / or the requesting clinician of any notifiable abnormalities. To enter and authorise results onto the LIMS system To answer and deal with telephone enquiries in a professional manner, providing information within defined protocols, recognising own professional boundaries. To follow the procedure for the incomplete lists for all relevant section(s). To adhere to flexible working arrangements within the department. In addition, you will be expected to participate to extended shift duties which include evening, night, weekend and Bank Holidays duties as required by Management. To be aware of current advances and appraise new techniques. To rotate through laboratory on a regular basis spending at least one month at each workstation (wherever possible) to maintain multidisciplinary skills for On-Call. Take an active role in the referral of samples to third party laboratories. Take an active role in the delivery of results including postal reports. Adhere to revenue capture procedures for each patient request. Ensure colleagues are informed of sectional changes, especially relating to On-call. Assist in other sections when required. Participate in a multi-disciplinary On-call rota. Provide input to maintaining policies and procedures, review and update as required. Comply with Health and Safety legislation and be aware of the responsibilities of the employee in this context. Participate in annual joint review.
