As a Laboratory Scientist in the Viral Zoonoses team, you will support the delivery of research projects and reference laboratory activities within the Virology Department. You will perform diagnostic tests to support outbreak response, commercial and statutory diagnosis of a broad range of viruses. The role will involve working in biocontainment level 2 and level 3 facilities and full training will be provided. In this role, you will have line management or functional management responsibilities for staff.
Main areas of work will include:
- Conduct and support experimental studies for research projects and reference laboratories for a variety of zoonotic viruses including coronaviruses, lyssaviruses, hantaviruses and viral haemorrhagic fever viruses.
- Carry out conventional virology, molecular and serological tests for a range of viruses and assist with the maintenance and management of the test portfolios for viral diseases.
- Conduct experimental and diagnostic work, some of which could involve the handling and sampling of laboratory animals or tissues derived from animal carcasses.
- Establish new techniques, write and implement SOPs and maintain, troubleshoot or improve existing methods, contributing to test validation.
- Maintain Safety standards while working in Biocontainment level 2 and 3 facilities, including contributing to risk assessments and through completion of laboratory room officer duties and checks.
- Contribute to maintaining an efficient and effective quality management system meeting the requirements of ISO9001:2015 certification and ISO17025 accreditation. Participating in both internal and external audits and ring trials, reviewing and maintaining SOPs, managing service and calibration of equipment and investigating non-conforming work.
- Prepare written reports for inclusion in manuscripts, publications and project reports, and present work at seminars and scientific conferences.
- Be part of the core capability team to support statutory rabies testing and other groups within the Virology Department to perform serological/molecular diagnostic tests in the event of an outbreak or to provide support for WHO/WOAH reference laboratories.
- Line management or functional management of staff, and training new staff members, visiting scientists and students as required.
