We have a fantastic opportunity for a Head Chef to lead the catering team at our Stafford Hospital in Wheaton Aston, Stafford. As Head Chef you will lead and motive a friendly and dedicated team of Chefs and Kitchen Assistants who provide nutritious and enticing meals for up to 36 young people some of which could be being supported to overcome an eating disorder. Ensuring mealtimes are an enjoyable part of the day, engaging our young people in the dining experience to help ensure our young people feel valued as individuals.

Our Stafford Hospital is a Tier 4 Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHS) hospital for young people aged 12-18. We specialise in supporting young people with severe or complex mental health conditions who need intensive inpatient treatment. We are dedicated to providing caring, supportive, recovery-focused treatment and we achieve this by working together with our young people, their families and other professionals. Our facilities include, Ofsted registered on-site school, High intensity suite, Occupational therapy kitchen, Gym, Outdoor sports area, including a basketball court, Three cabins for therapy, keep fit and a multi-faith cabin

What you'll be working:

  • 40 hours per week across 7 days.

What you'll be doing:

The Head Chef is responsible for overseeing kitchen operations, managing staff and ensuring high food quality and safety standards. As Head Chef, you will assign duties accordingly while inspecting all aspects of food preparation to make sure everything meets Food Safety Standards and ACG standards while monitoring young people's satisfaction. The Head Chef will be responsible for monitoring goals, timelines and deliverables. Coordinating team efforts and ensuring that objectives and actions are completed on time and to the highest quality. To carry out duties of the Head Chef of the hospital and to actively lead and participate in the preparation of meals.

To be successful in this role, you should have good understanding of food safety regulations, team management abilities and to work alongside your team


Planning & Coordination

  • To plan, review, and communicate all menus, co-operating closely with the hospital clinical teams and dieticians
  • Understand the key objectives and deliverables in collaboration with Head of Support Services
  • To order daily and weekly food supplies, in accordance with requirements of planned menus and ensure goods received are in accordance with orders placed, invoices received and required quality
  • Overseeing staff performance daily
  • Checking areas around of compliance according to PPM books and Food Safety regulations
  • Maintain detailed plans, including actions, owners and timelines.
  • Schedule rotas and arrange cover in cases of absence
  • Monitor inventory levels order supplies and manage food costs.
  • Ensuring weekly Food Hygiene and environment cleanliness audits and where necessary action plans to address any issues arising from the audits.
  • Ensure correct usage, storage and care of food products, stock control and equipment.

Team Management:

  • Manage a team of Chefs and kitchen assistants, providing direction, motivation, and support to ensure a cohesive and successful team.
  • Delegate and monitor tasks and responsibilities to team members, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.
  • Identify and communicate any potential conflicts or issues that may arise.
  • Conduct supervisions & appraisals that are timely and constructive.
  • Handles discipline as needed and in accordance with company policy

Communication & Reporting:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for suppliers, providing regular updates on status, risks, and changes.
  • Organise and lead meetings, preparing and distributing meeting minutes and action items.
  • Prepare detailed reports for senior management as needed.

Risk Management & Problem Solving:

  • Identify key risks and potential solutions to address potential issues.
  • Monitor and manage timelines, ensuring deadlines are met and deliverables are completed on time.

Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement:

  • Ensure that deliverables meet required standards and quality expectations.
  • Ensure compliance with Health and Safety, Food safety and Infection Control Policies in all areas.
  • Address young people' feedback and any concerns promptly to ensure satisfaction and maintain the hospitals reputation

What you'll have:

  • Work experience as a Head Chef or similar role
  • Hands-on experience with food preparation and managing a kitchen environment.
  • Experience working with teams.
  • Experience of handling conflicting priorities and expectations to ensure successful outcomes.
  • Good organisational and planning skills.
  • Strong team player with the ability to influence and manage effectively.
  • Good communication, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to solve problems and make decisions under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Always adopt a professional approach to young people in our care
  • A requirement to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues, visitors, carers, members of the multi-disciplinary teams, and professionals and managerial staff
