The successful candidate will need to offer professional advice, evaluate applications, carry out inspections, investigate complaints and maintain compliancy checks. The role requires both office and home working, with some flexibility required around evening or weekend work should it be required for licensing visits, and on occasions organise and participate in multi-agency operations.
As part of a well-established team, this Role is pivotal in maintaining the safety of the public in the Canterbury District when they utilise the restaurants and bars, take a ride in a taxi or attend any licensable premises. The priority is set around the Licensing Objectives, keeping the residents, businesses, and visitors to our local area safe.
The candidate will need to manage legal cases and be able to collate and evaluate evidence in accordance with national guidelines with minimal supervision. You will need the ability to make sound, objective decisions in accordance with Canterbury City Council policies and procedures, compile reports and on occasions attend Hearings and Court to give evidence
Essential:
Working knowledge of The Licensing Act 2003
Working knowledge of Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 together with the Town Police Clauses Act 1847 for Taxis and Private Hire
Proven record of compiling reports/case building
Ability to work flexibly when required
Gambling Act
Diving Licence with own vehicle

We have an exciting opportunity for a dynamic Licencing professional to join our Locality Team. Working as part of a larger multi disciplinary team you will work as part of the team responsible for implementation, enforcement and supporting the delivery of various licensing regimes including Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Drivers, Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Vehicles and Operators , Licensing Act and Gambling Act all in accordance with current legislation and good practice. The successful candidate will work in partnership with other organisations such as Kent Police and Trading Standards on emerging issues or trends by way of intelligence sharing and joint operations.
You will be a strong team player with a proactive attitude, demonstrable experience in enforcing legislation and handling criminal evidence and possess a sound knowledge and understanding of local authority licensing functions. The ideal candidate will be able to pick up cases and have the requisite knowledge and confidence to bring about a good outcome with minimal supervision. Our residents rely on us to ensure that businesses are safe and licensed – whether that is their local restaurants, bars or taking a taxi home so a strong customer focus is also essential.
