This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Acute Medicine with a special interest in Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) and will deliver 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs supporting professional activity. The post will be based at St James Hospital. The acute medical floor consists of 3 areas: Acute Medical Wards (J27 and J28), which also accommodate a short stay function, and an Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) (incorporating daily Hot Clinics and same day assessments). Collectively the acute medical floor areas admit approximately 40 to 80 patients per day. In addition, there are direct admissions to acute cardiology, gastroenterology, neurology, stroke and respiratory medicine which by-pass the acute medical floor. There are currently 7 consultants in acute medicine. The acute medicine directorate is currently planning to increase the strength and size of its acute consultant work force, to support the delivery of a new same day emergency care unit. In total, there are 10 higher specialty trainees in acute medicine in Leeds. Five are based on the acute medical floor, and the others are based full time in relevant specialties but participate in the on-call rota. Junior doctors work 4-6 month blocks in acute medicine, with additional doctors working on the acute floor when on-call. The department is well-staffed with FY1 doctors, FY2 doctors and core trainees in medicine and ACCS. The department currently has two undergraduate firms during the academic year. Third year and fourth year medical students from the University of Leeds work on the acute medical floor and participate in regular teaching sessions.
