Birmingham City Council is the largest local authority in the UK, committed to improving housing standards and community well-being across the city. As part of their efforts to raise the quality of private rented housing, we are recruiting Property Licensing Community Officers to support their property licensing schemes and help ensure safe, compliant, and well-managed homes for residents.
Your new role
As a Property Licensing Warden, you will be a key presence in the community, conducting ward-based patrols to identify suspected unlicensed properties and proactively address issues related to the private rented sector. You'll be the eyes and ears on the ground, helping to maintain safe and clean neighbourhoods while supporting tenants and landlords.Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting regular foot patrols in designated wards
- Identifying unlicensed or problematic private rented properties
- Reporting environmental and housing-related issues
- Completing follow-up admin work including calls and emails
- Escalating non-housing concerns to relevant council teams
- Building positive relationships with residents, landlords, and partner agencies (e.g. police, fire service)
- Collaborating with Licensing, Compliance, and Complex Case Officers
- Acting as a friendly and approachable point of contact for the public
- Participating in team activities and contributing to the success of the licensing schemes
This is a full-time position, initially for 3 to 6 months, with a strong likelihood of extension. The role involves outdoor work in all weather conditions and requires a good level of physical fitness. Suitable clothing and equipment is provided.
What you'll need to succeed
To thrive in this role, you'll need experience in a customer-facing position and strong communication skills. You should be confident working independently, capable of using modern technology (smartphones, tablets, laptops), and comfortable patrolling on foot across various areas of the city.Key qualities include:

- Patience, empathy, and a community-focused mindset
- Ability to build trust and rapport with diverse individuals
- Strong judgement, initiative, and teamwork
- A good understanding of Birmingham and its communities is desirable
- Familiarity with property licensing schemes is a plus but not essential. Training will be provided.
What you'll get in return
Pay Rate:
- First 13 weeks: £12.60/hour basic + holiday allowance (total: £14.12/hour)
- After 13 weeks: £14.32/hour basic + holiday allowance (total: £16.77/hour)
Contract: 3-6 months initially, with strong potential for extension
Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week️
Environment: Outdoor, community-based role with real impact
