Head of Democratic Services*

Description
The Head of Democratic Services plays a crucial role in ensuring the effective functioning of local government processes and enhancing democratic engagement within the community. This leadership position not only involves overseeing the operational aspects of democratic services but also contributes significantly to policy development, transparency, and public participation. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the delivery of high-quality support to elected officials, including council members, committees, and various public bodies. You will work closely with senior leaders to help shape the strategic direction of democratic services while ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and best practices. This role requires a passion for democracy and civic engagement, as you will develop initiatives aimed at increasing public understanding and participation in the democratic process. The Head of Democratic Services will also act as a key liaison between the council and the community, promoting a culture of transparency and accountability. Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Democratic Services team, ensuring effective service delivery and compliance with legislation.
Develop and implement policies and strategies that enhance democratic processes and public engagement.
Provide expert advice to elected members on governance, procedure, and constitutional matters.
Organize and facilitate council meetings, committee sessions, and public consultations.
Ensure the publication of public notices, agendas, minutes, and other necessary documents in line with statutory requirements.
Manage the electoral process within the local authority, including preparations for elections and referendums.
Promote transparency and accountability in local government operations and decisions.
Requirements
Proven experience in a leadership role within democratic services or a similar environment.
Strong understanding of local government legislation and procedures.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability in policy development and implementation related to democratic processes.
Experience in managing teams and fostering a collaborative working environment.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
A degree in public administration, political science, or a related field is preferred.
