We are seeking a skilled Chemist with experience in the steel industry to join our client’s team in West Bromwich.

The role involves carrying out chemical and physical analyses to ensure process control, quality assurance, and compliance with international standards. This is a hands-on laboratory position within a fast-paced industrial environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Prepare samples for chemical testing using cutting, milling, and grinding equipment
• Perform chemical analysis of molten metal using optical emission spectrometry
• Conduct gas analysis and carbon-sulphur analysis using IR combustion techniques
• Analyse raw materials for chemical composition and suitability
• Monitor steel cleanliness, inclusion content, and homogeneity through macro preparation
• Ensure all laboratory testing complies with national and international standards
• Verify steel, cobalt, and nickel grades meet customer specifications before dispatch
• Produce and verify certification for material dispatch
• Provide rapid and accurate test results to production teams for process adjustments
• Maintain accurate documentation of results, calibration records, and equipment maintenance
• Follow SOPs and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) procedures
• Ensure compliance with AS9100D quality management systems and safety protocols

Candidate Requirements:

• Minimum 2 years’ experience in a laboratory environment, preferably within steel or metals
• Hands-on expertise within optical emission spectrometry and Leco instruments
• Strong knowledge of steel grades and metallurgical principles
• Familiarity with quality standards is desirable (ISO, ASTM, IS codes)
• High attention to detail in testing and reporting
• Proficiency in chemical analysis techniques and instruments
• Effective communication skills for coordination with production and quality teams
• Ability to thrive in a high-pressure, fast-paced industrial environment
