The Dales Countryside Museum, operated by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, plays a vital role in preserving and interpreting the cultural heritage of the region.
This is a permanent, part-time position, working 15 hours per week, based at our Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes, near Leyburn, with regular travel throughout the National Park.

• Generous leave: 26 days’ annual leave, pro rata, plus bank holidays
• Flexible working arrangements: including flexi-time
• Pension scheme: Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS)
• Wellbeing support: Subsidised Healthcare scheme, cycle to work scheme and staff discounts
• Free parking
The Role
This is a hands-on role supporting the care, documentation and interpretation of the museum’s collections, helping to bring the stories of the Dales to life. You’ll manage the collection, edit image files for exhibitions and research and write object labels for both physical and online displays. You’ll liaise with researchers and provide access to collections.
Key responsibilities include:
• Ensure the effective care and documentation of the collection, including environmental monitoring and adherence to SPECTRUM standards.
• Labelling and packing objects and carrying out condition checks
• Coordinate incoming and outgoing loans.
• Handle public and specialist enquiries with professionalism and enthusiasm, supporting access to the collection.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date digital and physical records of the collection.
About you
You’re someone who combines a keen eye for detail with a passion for heritage and storytelling. You take pride in caring for collections and enjoy uncovering the stories behind objects, helping to connect people with the rich history of the Yorkshire Dales.
You’ll have experience working with museum databases such as MODES and be confident using photo editing software to support exhibitions and digital content. You’re comfortable responding to enquiries, supporting researchers, and maintaining accurate records, and you bring a collaborative spirit to working with colleagues and volunteers alike.
Your understanding of the local landscape, history and communities will help you interpret collections in meaningful ways. Whether working independently or as part of a team, you’re proactive, organised and committed to sharing the museum’s collections with diverse audiences.
As the role involves travel across the National Park, access to a car or suitable mobility support is essential.
