Information about the Specialty Our Neonatal Unit is a Local Neonatal Unit (Level 2) and has capacity for 29 designated cots with 5 Intensive care cots, 5 High Dependency cots and 19 Special care cots. There are also 4 designated transitional care cots in the postnatal ward, which by July 2025 will increase to 8. Neonates are part of the Perinatal Directorate which sits within the Black Country Local Maternity Neonatal System. The unit is part of the West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network. Neonatal services run dedicated baby clinics, neurodevelopmental and cardiac clinics at MMUH and Sandwell. Our care pathway includes babies of 27 weeks gestation and above, birthweight of 800g and above and short term (<48 hours) conventional ventilation. There is a Fetal Medicine Team and we provide care for a number of babies with significant congenital abnormalities. This includes babies with cardiac problems following birth, prior to transfer to Birmingham Childrens Hospital. Babies outside of care pathways, including those requiring inhaled nitric oxide, high frequency oscillatory ventilation and therapeutic hypothermia are stabilised and transferred to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for further management. The Newborn Transport Service (NTS)/KIDS team based at Birmingham Womens and Childrens Hospital, provide the transport service. The neonatal unit has high activity and undertakes about 3000 days intensive/high dependency care, 5270 special care days and 3200 transitional care days. At MMUH there is space to increase cot capacity if required in the future and the new unit meets all the British Association of Perinatal Medicine specifications.
