The Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) at the University of Southampton invites applications from exceptional individuals for the position of Lecturer or Associate Professor in Structural Dynamics. Related areas of interest include, but are not limited to, passive and active vibration control, biodynamics, vibroacoustics, vibration based non-destructive evaluation, nonlinear dynamics and electrodynamic systems.

The ISVR has been at the forefront of research and education in sound and vibration for over 60 years. We have built an international reputation through pioneering academic research, strong and enduring collaborations with industry, and generations of skilled graduates who have spread throughout the acoustics profession. We have excellent experimental facilities including a large 6-axis motion simulator and a suite of acoustic chambers.

You will have a PhD or equivalent experience in structural dynamics and vibration, and an impressive publication record in high-quality journals. You will have a clear vision for innovative future research programmes, the drive to secure external funding to build a research team in your area, and the ambition to establish yourself as an international expert in your research field. A demonstrable track record of research funding is required for appointment at Associate Professor level. Experience of working in or with industry will be considered an advantage.

You will have a collaborative and positive outlook, and enjoy working with colleagues and students. You will be strongly encouraged and supported to seek opportunities to collaborate across the University and with other world-leading institutions. You will be provided with mentorship and comprehensive training opportunities to ensure that you are able to develop your research, education and leadership skills.

You will have excellent communication skills and enthusiastically embrace innovative teaching practices. You will be a dependable member of the School of Engineering’s teaching staff, contributing to large modules across various engineering-related subjects. You may also coordinate modules, taking responsibility for curriculum design, module-level assessment, and quality assurance. You will also be expected to lead and contribute to more specialist modules, potentially aligned with your research areas. If you do not already have a teaching qualification in higher education, we will support you through our part time postgraduate certificate of academic practice (PGCAP) which is accredited by Advance HE and leads to Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. A demonstrable track record of teaching in higher education is required for appointment at Associate Professor level.

For informal enquiries, please contact the Head of the Dynamics Group, Dr Daniil Yurchenko (d.yurchenko@soton.ac.uk) or the Head of Department, Prof Tim Waters (tpw@soton.ac.uk).

The School of Engineering values diversity and inclusion, and we particularly welcome applications from women, BAME, LGBT, and disabled individuals. We hold an Athena SWAN bronze award and offer flexible work arrangements. The University of Southampton is a top-ranked, sustainable institution committed to minimising its environmental impact.
