The role:
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Construction Health & Safety Coordinator to work within the Repairs & Maintenance Service who are responsible for the provision of quality day-to-day repairs and maintenance of housing stock.
This is a key specialist role ensuring compliance with all Health & Safety legislation, including the Construction Design and Management Regulations (CDM), across a range of works and projects delivered through Landlord Services.
You’ll play a central role in supporting the Repairs & Maintenance service to fulfil its duties particularly acting as the Client and Principal Designer and in monitoring other duty holders through all stages of the construction process.
We are looking for someone who is motivated and passionate about addressing health and safety issues and is not daunted by working in a dynamic and developing service.
Key Responsibilities:
Ensure legal compliance with all Health & Safety legislation, including CDM, across all construction works and projects
Work collaboratively with managers and surveyors during the pre-construction phase, including drafting pre-construction plans and reviewing specifications, designs, risk assessments, and method statements
Produce and maintain Health & Safety files for each project
Carry out regular site inspections to monitor safe working practices
Support contractors, designers, and project teams to comply with H&S regulations, including attendance at pre-contract and progress meetings
Provide training to colleagues, including Asbestos Awareness and general H&S updates
Create and amend risk assessments, ensuring robust procedures are in place
Oversee arrangements for asbestos surveys and ensure compliance
Evaluate contractor Health & Safety documentation, including PQQs and ITTs
Respond to incidents, provide support to staff, and lead on accident/incident investigations, including RIDDOR reporting
Liaise with Corporate Health & Safety and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
Ensure effective communication with customers throughout the lifecycle of projects, using a variety of media to provide updates and promote engagement
Contribute to customer consultation and feedback to ensure programmes meet expectations
Maintain accurate asset and H&S data in relevant systems
Prepare and present reports for legal proceedings and attend court or public enquiries as required
What the client is looking for:
Demonstrable experience in a health and safety construction environment, and working knowledge of construction H&S Legislation including CDM Regulations 2015
HNC/HND in Building or extensive hands-on experience in building surveying or construction
Proven track record delivering large-scale maintenance and refurbishment projects
Experience of undertaking audits and/or inspections of construction sites, contractors, and mobile workplaces (vehicles) to verify compliance with legislative requirements
Confident drafting pre-construction H&S plans and creating/adapting risk assessments
Risk management methodology, calculation and reporting experience
Experienced in training staff and operatives on all aspects of health and safety
Strong at prioritising tasks, managing contractors, and enforcing H&S standards to avoid breaches
Committed to improving customer outcomes by cutting risks and boosting performance
Ability to meet financial & budgetary targets
Skilled in incident investigations, producing clear, photo-backed reports and creating professional presentations
