The post holder will be working with a variety of Consultants, Specialty Doctors, Trust Doctors, Specialty Trainees, Core Trainees and Foundation Trainees across multiple specialties. The clinical duties of the Fellow on ARTU (ATF) will include provision of daily ward-based care including medical assessment and perioperative care as appropriate. The ATF will also be responsible for medical support to the multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, providing the day-to-day care of inpatients and contributing to outcome measurement, communication, data collection and documentation. There will be a need to coordinate care between the trauma specialities and facilitate transfers from ARTU to speciality wards or referring hospitals. It is essential the ATF is a team player with excellent inter-personal skills. The precise role within each team and the proportion of clinical time spent between major trauma specialties and specialist rehabilitation will vary. The ward is staffed with experienced Advanced Nurse Practitioners, with whom the postholder will share and coordinate duties. The role requires attendance at the daily MDT handover each morning, Monday to Friday at 08:30h. The ATF will then join ward-based rounds with acute specialty teams, predominantly T&O, spinal surgery or Rehabilitation Medicine, or will undertake independent daily reviews of inpatients. The role also involves being available to the ward nursing staff to undertake clinical assessments, support with medication prescribing or assist with simple procedures such as venous cannulation or blood sampling. The ATF will order appropriate radiological and other investigations, as well as liaise with colleagues from a variety of specialties in the hospital. The ATF will work closely with all members of the MDT on the unit and attend patient and family meetings as needed.
