Our Client is seeking an experienced and highly skilled Interim Public Health Principal (Epidemiology & Evidence) to lead our public health intelligence, epidemiology, and evidence-based functions. This role will be pivotal in supporting statutory duties including the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment, production of technical reports for the Director of Public Health, needs assessments, and evidence reviews.
The successful candidate will bring senior-level expertise in epidemiology, statistics, and data governance, and will play a key role in guiding strategic decision-making, supporting system partners, and improving population health outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead on the development, interpretation, and dissemination of public health intelligence and evidence to inform policy and strategy.
Provide expert epidemiological and statistical advice, including the design and delivery of needs assessments, evaluations, and evidence reviews.
Oversee and assure data governance processes, including management of sensitive health datasets (births, deaths, clinical, and public health data).
Lead and manage public health analytical teams and support trainees, ensuring a culture of continuous learning and development.
Present complex information to a wide range of audiences including senior officers, clinicians, elected members, and the public, ensuring clarity and accessibility.
Work collaboratively across the health and social care system, operating effectively in a political environment while maintaining professional independence.
Manage programmes, projects, and budgets, ensuring delivery against multiple priorities and value for money.
Contribute to strategic planning and the facilitation of complex change across the system.
Essentials:
Proven track record of leading on public health intelligence, epidemiology, and evidence-based practice.
Significant experience in designing, developing, and implementing data governance processes.
Senior management experience, including team leadership during times of challenge and change.
Experience of working with multiple health and social care datasets and information systems.
Experience of presenting and interpreting complex data to diverse audiences.
Experience of managing analysts and supporting professional development of trainees.
Experience of working in a political environment and handling sensitive issues.
Practical experience in facilitating complex change and managing large datasets and budgets.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Public Health or equivalent Level 7 qualification (with coverage of epidemiology, statistics, and research methods).
Evidence of relevant training in data governance, big data management, statistical and presentation software.
Evidence of ongoing professional development.
Commitment to completing registration with the UK Public Health Specialist Register.
Excellent oral and written communication and presentation skills, with ability to translate complex data into meaningful recommendations.
Strong analytical, epidemiological, and research appraisal skills.
Ability to influence and persuade a wide range of stakeholders using data and evidence.
Project and programme management skills, including financial and people management.
Politically astute, with ability to navigate complex organisational and system relationships.
Ability to strategically lead programmes of work under competing pressures.
Ability to work independently, take initiative, and use reflective practice to support ongoing professional development.
