To ensure that clinical protocols support the clinical work in primary care secondary care and that these are evidence based and version controlled To ensure that comprehensive patient information is available to support the clinical work in the area of responsibility and that this is contemporary, compliant with current standards and version controlled. Work with the management team and clinical colleagues to ensure the most cost effective use of resources in the pursuance of the Trust and CWPS objectives. Ensure that the handling of data and information within the specialty is compliant with the Data Protection Act and other relevant legislation.To set up effective liaison with Pathology IT for data analysis. Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures. Participate in the Duty Biochemist rota during the working day where required.The role of the Duty Biochemist includes authorization of results of biochemical analysis; telephoning results to health care staff when results may affect the immediate treatment of the patient; addition of comments to results to assist in their interpretation by other health care staff; the addition of further tests where relevant; answering queries from other health care workers about appropriate biochemical investigations and patient management; sorting out problems with samples, analyses, requests, reports etc as they arise during the day, using appropriate communication skills relevant to the situation. Advise senior medical staff, nursing staff and other health professionals on the investigation and interpretation of complicated biochemical and metabolic processes in complex situations also utilizing data from other specialties Oversee the participation and performance in national quality assurance schemes in line with nationally accepted standards Oversee the selection and introduction of analytical methods and services used under the control of the Departments. Initiate and implement service improvement programmes.Lead on service development and delivery at a departmental level.This may include: introduction of new services; service review as a result of audit, or in response to published guidelines; workforce planning and departmental structure, including both personnel and service provision. Monitor demand patterns and usage of the service by hospital clinicians and General Practitioners taking relevant action to ensure cost-effective and clinically-effective usage of clinical biochemistry tests. Maintain HCPC registration.Develop and maintain the competencies required to carry out the duties of the post. To use and keep up to date with changes and software updates to the computerised Laboratory Information System (LIS) according to the authorised protocols. To prepare protocols, reports, presentations, scientific papers and posters and other documents using Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Q-Pulse and other specialised software as appropriate.
