A Vacancy at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

We are seeking to appoint an individual with prior bariatric surgery experience and anticipate that the successful candidate will be able to deliver a range of bariatric procedures (both elective and emergency) early in their tenure. Mentorship will be available for those who require it.

Additionally, the appointee is expected to take a leadership role in the ongoing development of our bariatric unit, focusing on pathway improvements, innovative approaches to bariatric surgery, enhancing theatre efficiency, and establishing a fast-track bariatric surgery service that integrates pharmacotherapy while supporting other services within the hospital.

We also encourage applicants with demonstrated leadership experience in healthcare and a proven track record of driving improvements to apply.

The appointee will also be expected to deliver non-bariatric upper GI services, including benign and malignant upper GI work, although upper GI cancer operations are not conducted on-site, and the volume of such patients are relatively low. The appointee will be expected to perform routine cholecystectomy and where appropriate perform “hot cholecystectomy”. There may also be a requirement to perform routine general surgery work, including hernia surgery and lumps/bumps, depending on the service needs

1.Clinical responsibilities

The post-holder will be expected to lead the appropriate and safe management of patients under his or her care, including elective and emergency bariatric patients, non-bariatric upper GI patients, general surgery patients and emergency general surgery patients.

An office, computer, and appropriate secretarial support will be provided.

2.Teaching and academic activity

The post holder will participate in the postgraduate and undergraduate teaching and training programme within the hospital. Research activity will be encouraged.

3.Management and clinical audit

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of the service within the directorate. The appointee will be expected to take part in the management and routine administrative duties associated with the care of their patients, running of clinical departments and the supervision of junior medical staff and specialist nurses. In addition, he or she will be expected to adopt an active role in the wider management arena within the directorate where appropriate.

4.Continuing professional development

Continuing professional development is an integral part of a consultant post. The appointee will be encouraged to ensure that his/her full entitlement to study leave is taken. The appointee will be expected to attend an annual job plan review with the Clinical Lead of the service.
