- The UEFA European Championships 2028 UK & Ireland - ensuring the Government delivers on its commitments to ensure that this major event is staged successfully, maximising economic growth and benefiting local communities. This programme is part of the Government Major Projects Portfolio;
- The future pipeline of major sporting events - driving forward the Government's work, with partners, to secure, and successfully host, the world’s biggest and best sporting events, including the women’s Rugby World Cup 2025;
- Grassroots facilities delivery - overseeing the delivery of hundreds of millions into multi-sport grassroots facilities across the UK, as part of the EURO 2028 impact programme and to tackle inactivity, support the Health mission and building cohesive communities.
The directorate is evolving out of a unit within the existing Sport and Gambling Directorate, with which it will need to continue working seamlessly. The roles will be part of the Sport and Gambling Analysis team, an analytical spoke team embedded across the two policy Directorates. This is an exciting opportunity to join the Major Sporting Projects Delivery Directorate and be a part of the Sport and Gambling (S&G) analysis team.. There are two Assistant Economist roles available.
Role 1: EURO 2028 Assistant Economist
The post-holder will work on the planning of UK and Ireland hosting the men’s UEFA European Championships in 2028 (EURO 2028) and will be expected to liaise with UK Sport and other Home Nations stakeholders on all EURO 2028 evaluation related work. The post-holder will also provide general economist expertise across the Directorate.
Key deliverables:
- Leading on the EURO 2028 evaluation, working closely with the G7 Social Researcher and EURO 2028 policy teams, liaising with UK Sport, the evaluation supplier and other stakeholders and meeting evaluation requirements, particularly on ex-post value-for-money assessments using economic methods and techniques.
- Working closely with policy, delivery partners and others to deliver on the evaluation.
- Communicating updates to a range of stakeholders and providing comments on research methodologies, evaluation reports and research products.
- Feeding into advice papers and submissions to ministers and tournament governance.
- General economist support across the Directorate e.g. on business cases and impact assessments.
Role 2: Major Sporting Events Assistant Economist
The post-holder will provide economist support across the Directorate and will also support the evaluation of the Government’s Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities Programme.
Key deliverables:
- Working closely with team members in developing high quality business cases, impact assessments and evaluations on sport and major sporting events. This will involve work closely with UK Sport and Sport England.
- Supporting the G7 Social Researcher on the Multi-Sport Grassroots Facilities’ evaluation, supporting project management, economic evaluation and analysis of programme monitoring information.
- Leading or supporting on the analytical research design of the government health and growth mission, including literature reviews, managing small research contracts with suppliers and simple modelling of existing data.
- Being part of a high-performing multidisciplinary team, building the evidence base to help support policy decisions across the two Directorates.
