About us

The 545-acre Science and Innovation Park (SIP) is the home of the Science Museum The Science and Innovation Park as the home of the Science Museum Groups' collection is transforming how we care, manage, and make accessible over 400,000 objects and 1.5m items in our Library and Archive. Our new collections management facility, the Hawking Building, houses everything from microscope slides to railway carriages; with further objects stored in other facilities across the Park.

At Science and Innovation Park, we have an exciting programme of capital (construction / building development) works planned which will include improvements to our collection stores and continuing our work to improve the conditions SMG objects are located in. These works include roof repairs, upgrades to BMS systems, installation of wayfinding across collection stores and feasibility studies for future projects.

To support our exciting programme, we are looking for a Collections Services Team Leader on a permanent, full-time basis.

About the role

As Collections Services Team Leader, you will work alongside our Conservation and Storage & Logistics teams, as well the Capital Project Managers to manage the effect of the capital projects in relation to our collections, relocating objects, preparing protection works and supervision of contractors associated with the construction works.

Supported by the Group Collections Storage & Logistics Manager, as well as the wider Collections Services teams based at SIP, you will ensure that the needs and requirements of Collections Services is represented within the projects, coordinate guidance on any movement and protection of collections, make sure lessons are learned and shared between the different projects and that safety of the collections is prioritised.

Hybrid working is available in this role in line with the current hybrid working policy at SMG.

The Science and Innovation Park is difficult, though not impossible, to access without a vehicle. Access to a car is not a requirement for the role, but we ask candidates to consider their travel plans before applying. We do offer interest free loans to assist with the cost of travel options like season tickets, bicycles, mopeds or scooters.

About you

We are keen to see applications from candidates with strong project coordination experience who thrive on working collaboratively across teams to deliver results. You'll bring practical expertise in collections care, including the handling, storage, and movement of heritage objects of all shapes, sizes, and materials. With a high level of autonomy in the role, you'll be confident making evidence-based decisions and using your initiative to solve challenges as they arise. Strong contractor management skills, effective organisation, and the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders and resources will be key to your success in this role.

Don't feel you meet all the criteria? We welcome you to apply even if your experience doesn't match directly. With your transferable skills, you could be the right candidate for this, or other opportunities that we have.
