Assistant Secretary to the Administrative Justice Council (AJC)
Private Offices Directorate, Judicial Office
Organisation:
The Judicial Office (JO) is a unique branch of the civil service, independent from the machinery which supports the Government and dedicated to supporting the judiciary as the third arm of the state. We promote and safeguard judicial independence to maintain confidence in the rule of law. We are answerable not to Ministers but instead, through our Chief Executive, to the Lady Chief Justice of England and Wales (LCJ) and the Senior President of Tribunals as we help them to fulfil their responsibilities to the judiciary.
We support c.22,000 judicial office holders, providing policy, legal and handling advice, and operational support. This includes advice on judicial leadership, support with relationships with Government and Parliament, assistance with justice sector reform, judicial education and training, communications, and HR.
Directorate:
The postholder will join the Judicial Private Offices directorate. The business units include operational private offices; jurisdiction and policy private offices; and the Judicial Executive Board Secretariat.
Overview:
A unique opportunity to help drive the work of the Administrative Justice Council (AJC), and to help members consider how to make the administrative justice system more accessible, fair, and efficient and to support its development.
The Administrative Justice Council is a non-statutory oversight body for the administrative justice system across the UK and is independent of government and the judiciary. It considers how to make the administrative justice system more accessible, fair, and efficient. The role supports the Chair of the AJC, the Senior President of Tribunals, and its members to ensure the administrative justice system operates fairly and effectively for those who use it. The administrative justice system includes tribunals, public services ombudsman schemes, advice services and dispute resolution services.
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a busy Judicial Private Office and ensure the effective running of the AJC including its Council, Steering Group, sector-based panels and working groups to ensure work is delivered to a high standard.
Role Summary:
Based in the Senior President of Tribunal’s Private Office, the successful candidate will assist the Secretary to the AJC in planning the future work of the Council; working closely with Council and Panel members, including scheduling, arranging and management of regular meetings and one-off events; together with building strong working relationships with external stakeholders across the administrative justice system to assist in the work of the Council. The postholder will provide secretariat duties for working groups and committees, with duties including assisting Chairs with the setting and delivery of objectives and ensuring delivery of the final output. Additional duties will include providing background research assistance, briefing for chairs, the preparation of papers and assisting with the production of reports. Staying up to date with developments and trends across the administrative justice system is an essential part of the role, as well as identifying relevant stakeholders to engage with on topical issues.
As an essential member of the Secretariat, the postholder will have responsibility for the external communications of the AJC’s work, helping to raise the profile of its work by drafting and producing its tri-annual Newsletter, and managing the Council’s website.
Main Activities / Responsibilities:
The main responsibilities of the posts include, but are not limited to:
Working with the Secretary on the strategic planning of the future work of the Council and its Panels;
