Are you passionate about delivering high-quality, customer-focused services within your community? Luton Council is seeking a dedicated Visiting and Inspection Officer to support the Revenues and Benefits teams through a wide range of visits, inspections, and valuation assistance. This role plays a vital part in ensuring that services are delivered efficiently and in line with legislation, local policies, and best practices.

You'll be instrumental in helping to maximise income and benefits for some of Luton’s most vulnerable residents, ensuring they receive the support and information they need. If you're committed to making a difference and thrive in a role that combines fieldwork with public service, we’d love to hear from you.

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

About you
Do you have a strong sense of public service and the confidence to work independently in the community? We’re seeking a capable and compassionate Visiting and Inspection Officer to join our team. This is a key role requiring excellent communication skills—both written and verbal—to engage effectively with a wide range of customers, including those who may be vulnerable or living with mental, physical, or learning disabilities. You’ll be expected to handle sensitive information with care, in line with policies, legislation, and procedures.

The successful candidate will be confident entering unfamiliar environments and able to defuse conflict using recognised techniques and sound judgement. Strong organisational skills and the ability to meet deadlines and targets independently are essential.

You will be responsible for gathering and recording accurate financial, personal, and statistical data for use by the Authority. Confidence in using computer systems, including databases, Microsoft applications, and mobile IT equipment, is required. A sound understanding of equality principles and lone working procedures is also important for this role, which involves visiting customers in their homes or businesses.

This is a public facing role so you’ll need to show off your fluency in speaking and writing English.

Flexibility is key, as occasional out-of-hours work may be necessary—for example, to carry out residency checks. If you're proactive, professional, and committed to supporting your local community, we’d love to hear from you.

About us
Our ambitious Luton 2040 Vision – that no-one in Luton will have to live in poverty – is at the heart of everything we do. We recognise that our people are remarkable, talented, committed and passionate about serving our residents.

The people of Luton depend heavily on this council – and that means our workforce! Are you ready to realise the remarkable and help us deliver our vision?

We welcome applications from all sections of the community and are committed to developing a workforce that reflects the diversity of our borough

Application Process
Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person’s criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.

On occasions, we may close a vacancy early due to a very high number of applications being received.
