We're currently seeking a Secondary Teaching Assistant - SEMH to join a passionate team within a Secondary Alternative Provision based in Bury.

This full-time, temp-to-perm role begins in September 2025 and offers a meaningful opportunity to work in a setting where tailored support and daily progress are key.

About the Setting

This role is based in a Secondary Alternative Provision in Bury, dedicated to supporting young people aged 11-16 who are unable to access mainstream education. Students at this school often present with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, behavioural challenges, or are at risk of exclusion. The school provides a nurturing, trauma-informed environment focused on building trust, developing social skills, and helping pupils re-engage with learning. The team is committed to delivering personalised support that enables every student to succeed at their own pace.

Role Summary

• Job Title: Secondary Teaching Assistant - SEMH
• Location: Secondary Alternative Provision, Bury
• Start Date: September 2025
• Working Hours: Full-time - Monday to Friday, 8:30am-3:30pm
• Contract: Long-term - with the potential to become permanent for the right person.
• Pay Range: £95-£110 per day (dependent on experience)
• Payment: PAYE via Step Teachers (no umbrella deductions)
• Equal Pay: Pay parity with permanent staff after 12 weeks

Key Responsibilities

• Supporting pupils with SEMH needs, behavioural difficulties, and Autism Spectrum Conditions
• Building strong relationships through patience, consistency, and empathy
• Recognising behavioural patterns and applying de-escalation strategies to maintain a calm environment
• Adapting learning tasks to meet individual student needs and comprehension levels
• Providing 1:1 or small group support as directed by teaching staff
• Encouraging progress through positive reinforcement and structured support
• Working collaboratively with teaching staff, SEN specialists, families, and external agencies
• Helping maintain a safe, inclusive, and structured classroom atmosphere

Requirements

• A CV covering the last 10 years of work or education history
• Proof of Right to Work in the UK and recent Proof of Address
• An Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)
• Suitable references from the last 2 years
• Overseas Police Clearance (if applicable)
• Prior experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour or mental health needs
