Our client is looking for SEN Assessment and Review Officer to join their SEND team, responsible for managing statutory assessments, drafting and reviewing Education, Health & Care Plans (EHCPs), and ensuring compliance with the Children and Families Act 2014 and SEND Code of Practice 2015.
Job Role:
Compliance & Legal Responsibility – Ensure all statutory duties under the law are met to avoid legal challenge.
Co-ordination of Assessments – Oversee the needs assessment and review process.
Case Management – Handle a complex caseload, with direct management of a case coordinator.
Stakeholder Engagement – Work closely with schools, families, and multi-agency professionals.
EHC Plan Development – Produce aspirational, outcome-focused EHCPs.
Core Duties:
Family Engagement – Work collaboratively and transparently with parents, carers, and young people.
School Partnership – Provide guidance and challenge to schools on assessment and review.
Drafting EHCPs – Ensure compliance with the Code of Practice and minimise legal risks.
Negotiation & Placement Decisions – Liaise with schools over placements for pupils with EHCPs.
Multi-Agency Co-ordination – Lead joint work with health and social care services.
Review Process – Chair meetings, attend annual reviews, and assess professional reports.
Record Keeping & Systems – Maintain accurate records and use case management databases.
Team Supervision – Support, monitor, and appraise the work of a case coordinator.
Representation – Act as the LA’s representative with other authorities for out-of-area cases.
Risk & Conflict Management – Handle contentious situations to reduce legal challenges.
Essential Requirements:
Education Level – A-level (or equivalent) plus GCSE English.
SEND Processes in an LA – Solid experience in statutory SEND procedures.
EHC Plan Drafting – Proven experience writing or working with EHCPs/statements.
Education Systems Knowledge – Good understanding of school/college systems.
Legislation Knowledge – Education Act 1996, Children and Families Act 2014, SEND Code of Practice 2015.
High-level Communication – Both written and verbal, across varied audiences.
Negotiation & Challenge – Ability to hold schools and professionals to statutory duties.
Outcome-Focused Planning – Understanding and applying person-centred, aspirational planning.
Organisation & Resilience – Managing high workloads and contentious cases under pressure.
Digital Competency – Proficient with Word, Excel, databases, and reporting tools.
