Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and proactive Building & Fabric Works Operative to join our maintenance team at Merville Barracks, Circular Road South, Colchester CO2 7UT. You will be responsible for carrying out reactive maintenance across approximately 150 buildings within and around the garrison complex. This role demands flexibility, efficiency, and the ability to manage your own workload while delivering high-quality results on time.
What you’ll do:
Perform a range of building and fabric repairs, including:
Lock repairs/replacements (simplex & mortice locks)
Timber flooring repairs
Fence repairs/replacements
Door repairs/replacements (ironmongery, handles, closers, hinges)
Kitchen repairs (units & worktops)
Glazing repairs (DGU, vision panels, glazing bead replacements)
Carpet and ceiling tile replacements
Fitting fixtures (curtains, blinds, mirrors, towel rails, etc.)
Painting and decorating
Vinyl flooring (non-welded joints)
Friction hinge replacements
Patch plastering/making good
Paving slab works
Guttering/downpipe cleaning & repairs
Work closely with the Helpdesk to ensure smooth job allocation.
Maintain productivity despite access issues.
Adhere to JSP 375 and health & safety legislation.
Participate in Sodexo’s out-of-hours emergency service when required.
What you bring:
People-friendly with excellent customer service skills.
Must hold a full UK driving licence for 2 years or more.
Must be over 25 years of age to drive a company vehicle.
Good verbal, numerical, interpersonal, and computer skills.
Motivated, flexible, and innovative approach to work.
Strong knowledge of Health & Safety Legislation and COSHH.
Competent in basic carpentry, kitchen fitting, timber floor repairs/replacements.
Fabric repairs, carpet/ceiling tiles, painting & decorating.
Ironmongery repairs/replacements.
Plumbing knowledge advantageous but not essential.
Knowledge of fire doors and glazing replacements advantageous.
Previous experience working within an MoD site desirable.
Qualifications (Desirable)
NVQ Level 2/3 in Carpentry/Joinery
IPAF & PASMA certification
Asbestos awareness
General COSHH awareness
Basic plumbing knowledge
