GAB’s prime role is providing end to end technical support to legacy and future workflows and databases on systems based in DGC at MOD Feltham and RAF Wyton, focusing on the users of mono and stereo imagery performing data capture, manipulation and output for all products, alongside data storage, curation and provision. GAB provide a service ensuring DGC staff have the technical capability and know-how to collect, produce, store and provide Foundation GeoINT to Defence customers and Partners delivering Requests for Information on time, every time.

These roles require the management of agile software development that delivers rapid enhancements to NCGI operational capabilities. Knowledge and experience of the software development life cycle is desirable. The postholders will develop new and enhance/modify existing capabilities/functionality to meet evolving requirements and address software bugs (discrepancies). There will often be a need to provide guidance, technical knowledge, and innovative solutions to such work.

For any cartographic production workflow, manage modifications and enhancements to existing geospatial tools and processes; provide guidance in support of the development and maintenance of new tools and processes. Develop DGC ways of working with commercial, open source and government furnished applications and tools in line with NCGI projects. Embrace technology on all domains to introduce new or innovative tools. Ensure the appropriate testing and evaluation of software applications has taken place prior to release to the Production environment.

The team performs analysis, programming, fault diagnosis, testing, requirements capture/verification/resolution of problems, and the development, testing and evaluation of geospatial web services and geospatial applications software. Additionally, all staff in GAB are required to offer Subject Matter Expertise (SME) for current and future geospatial deliveries, to ensure that geospatial exploitation systems are fit for purpose. It is important that the post holders keep abreast of evolving technology, and where appropriate, endeavours to ensure that NCGI benefits from such.

Day to day responsibilities in Geographic Information Development, Assessment and Response Environment (GeoIDARE) will include but are not limited to:

Managing modifications and enhancements to existing geospatial tools and processes.
Supporting the delivery of new tools and processes.
Testing and evaluating software applications.
Testing technological solutions to address research and development requirements.
Provide technical support to enable evaluation of acquired digital geospatial information.

Regular travel to MOD Feltham will be required.

For external candidates this role will be based at RAF Wyton.

For candidates who are currently employed at MOD Feltham, the role could be located temporarily at Feltham before permanently relocating to RAF Wyton in line with the scheduled site closure. MOD Feltham based staff may be eligible for a relocation package when the post relocates to RAF Wyton subject to MOD policy. This role will be permanently based at RAF Wyton from Autumn 2025.   Should the successful candidate take up at the appointment at RAF Wyton, there will also be a requirement for detached duty between sites until the permanent closure of MOD Feltham.

All jobs advertised in DI are subject to fair and open competition.

Remote working within this role is something that can be discussed at interview stages or with your future line manager if you are found successful.

Please note, candidates will be redirected to the Civil Service Jobs website where you will need to submit your application form. Please note the closing date above is incorrect and cannot be amended so please check the closing date on Civil Service Jobs and allow enough time to submit your application form.
