HM Coastguard (HMCG) is the operational arm of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) with responsibility for 6 Coastguard Functions - Search and Rescue (SAR), Pollution Response, Vessel Traffic Management, Maritime Safety, Maritime Security and Emergency and Disaster management. There are four delivery disciplines within HM Coastguard, Maritime Operations, which coordinates activities from an operations room environment, Aviation which operates the Aeronautical Coordination Centre from an operations room environment, Coastal Operations which manages resources and service provision on the coast, and Counter Pollution and Salvage which responds to at sea and shoreline pollution incidents and ensures that ports and harbours have response plans in place.

The role holder is accountable to the Chief Coastguard for HM Coastguard's delivery of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) and related tasks and functions and is specifically responsible for:

Delivering sound leadership and management, including medium and longer-term tactical planning and the coordination of resources and functions, to meet HMCG's Vessel Traffic Services function.

Fulfilling line management responsibilities for Team Leaders and confirming officer responsibilities for Vessel Traffic Services Operator’s (VTSO), and performance managing their team in accordance with agency policies (Performance Management Review, absence management etc.) ensuring that processes and opportunities are in place that encourage staff to maintain personal competency levels and comply with continuation training and Continuous Professional Development requirements.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

Maintain a high level of currency and competence in the use of current operational VTS systems and related technologyOverseeing the provision of Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) through continuous performance reviewsOversee the delivery of formal training and certification of VTS operators as well as SupervisorsPreparation of management information and statistics related to traffic movement in the Dover StraitsMake recommendations regarding operating practices for VTS
