An opportunity has arisen for a part time consultant orthodontist post within the Dental Services Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital specialty of Orthodontics is based at Birmingham Dental Hospital, Glebefields Health Centre, Tipton and Boots, Birmingham City Centre. The orthodontic department at Birmingham dental Hospital is shared with Paediatric dentistry and is situated on the first floor of the dental hospital. It has 24 chairs in an open plan layout. There is a modern, well equipped tutorial room and a computerised treatment planning room. An orthodontic laboratory is situated on the second floor and there are currently four technicians. Support services are provided including dental nurses, orthodontic therapists, orthodontic technicians and dental hygienists. Secretarial support is provided. Radiographic (including CBCT), photographic, computer and laboratory services are all present on site. The senior dental staff in the department are: Miss S Kotecha, Head of Department and Training Programme Director, Mr J Turner, Consultant Orthodontist Mr B Khambay, Professor of Orthodontics/Consultant Orthodontist Miss Semina Visram, Consultant Orthodontist Mr E Habib, Consultant Orthodontist Mr S Higgins, Consultant Orthodontist Miss Muqbil, Consultant Orthodontist Miss Salima Visram, Consultant Orthodontist Visiting consultants are; Mr Shargill (Telford) The department runs a three-year Specialty Registrar (StR) training programme and accepts between 3 and 4 applicants each October to follow an SAC approved programme with a view to taking an RCS (Royal College of Surgeons) MOrth exam (membership in Orthodontics) and Birmingham University MRes (Masters in Research) degree. In addition, there are currently 3 post-CCST trainees. Most training grade staff spend part of their week in a district hospital. Friday of each week is set aside for the academic component of the training and related activities. Job Purpose The post is a part-time orthodontic consultant post to replace a retiring consultant based at Birmingham Dental Hospital and a community clinic within the Birmingham area. This post will be split between 2 sites. The priority for this post is to undertake new patient clinics and carry out treatment for a cohort of patients from the existing waiting list. Service re-evaluation has confirmed the complexity of patients requiring hospital treatment and this in turn has highlighted the level of clinical skills required. The post holder will be on the General Dental Council Specialist List in Orthodontics, will have significant clinical experience and will be capable of unsupervised clinical activity. Responsible for The post holder will be responsible for the treatment of complex level 3b orthodontic cases and the supervision of specialty trainees and orthodontic therapists. The consultant will have an annual job plan review and appraisal
