The Role:
• We are looking for a confident, active and compassionate enabler to support our 9-year-old son, A.D., who has apraxia, which makes spoken communication difficult, and some sensory processing needs. He responds best to people who really take the time to understand him and are positive, kind, and enthusiastic. A.D. is full of energy and has a deep need for regular physical activity such as climbing, skateboarding, and movement-based play.
This is a lone-working position designed to give the family some much-needed respite. You will be working with A.D. 1:1 in the community and occasionally at home. A.D. requires consistent reassurance, gentle transitions, and someone who can remain calm and confident during challenging moments and help him find a way through when things feel overwhelming.
Main Duties:
• Taking A.D. to physical activities such as climbing walls, skateparks, and outdoor play areas
Helping A.D. safely transition from car to activity and back again
Helping A.D. navigate any tricky moments with calmness and flexibility
Occasional cooking or baking activities at home
Encouraging positive interaction and emotional wellbeing through play
Providing safe, confident supervision in public settings
Personal Qualities and Attributes required:
• Experienced in supporting children or young people with autism and additional needs
Physically active and comfortable supervising in busy or stimulating environments
Calm under pressure and confident during emotional or behavioural dysregulation
Naturally positive, patient, and relationship-driven
Able to take initiative and adapt activities in the moment
Car owner with valid UK driving licence and business insurance
Reliable, punctual, and committed to consistency
Comfortable with lone working
Must like Dogs and Cats
Able to build a good rapport with A.D. siblings
Please note that this role may be subject to a DBS check, your employer may also ask for you to supply references.
You must be able to prove the right to work in the UK. No sponsorships are available.
Hours: 8 hours per week, ideally split across 2 x 3-hour sessions and 1 x 2-hour session
Flexibility on days/times to be discussed
Pay: £13.57 per hour
Job Type: Part time
Please note, Compass Disability Services (Compass Independent Living Team) is a support, advisory and payroll service. We support people with a disability or long-term health condition to live independently and retain control of their lives within the community. We are not the person that you will work for. You will work for the individual or family that we are supporting.
