MANAGERIAL RESPONSIBILITIESTo ensure a safe environment is maintained for patient/staff in accordance with the Health and Safety Policy and clinical governance agenda.Undertake the role of lead midwife for the Maternity Service in the absence of the Clinical Midwifery Manager which will include being the bleep holder for the Division out of hours.Actively manage change, in accordance with the Divisional/Trusts objectives.To be aware of the budgetary implications of changes in clinical practice.Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff for the maternity service.Monitor and manage clinical workload to ensure the effective deployment of manpower.Monitor staff performance ensuring that an appropriate induction programme is undertaken. Facilitate annual performance reviews.Formulate facilitate and attend regular staff meetings within your area of practice. CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIESPromote the well- being and safeguarding of children and young people by implementing the Trusts policy and procedures, acting promptly on concerns, communicating effectively and sharing information appropriately.Ensure that, within available resources, the clinical environment is adequately staffed and take all possible action to minimize clinical risk to women/babies as well as professional and personal risk for self and others when optimum staffing levels are compromised.Take action to ensure that all clinical risks are identified, reported within the clinical risk reporting framework and monitor outcomes, which include the identification of lessons learned.Ensure that the philosophy, policies, procedures and standards of care within the maternity service are in line with the Trust strategy and are appropriately maintained. Proactively contribute to the development of care pathways within maternity service.Develop and implement evidence based woman centered care that is NSF standard driven and encapsulates innovative practice that effectively utilizes resources and provides women with individualized continuity of care.To act as a role model in promoting professional standards and partnerships.Be fully aware of the role of the Supervisor of Midwives; work in collaboration with Supervisors in supporting midwives.Keep contemporaneous records of the woman/baby care in accordance with the NMC Midwives rules and standards for record keeping in line with CNST and Trust policy?Develop and enhance skills as required in line with service developments. EDUCATION:Work in partnership with educational colleagues ensuring that midwifery practice and approaches to care are conducive to a supportive lifelong learning environment encouraging reflection.Support student midwives and mentors/assessors to ensure that the midwifery experience meets the required practical and educational standards. SELF DEVELOPMENT:Consult as appropriate with your line manager. Move to educate ensure you complete an annual appraisal.Maintain a professional portfolio.Take on delegated responsibilities conducive to personal development.Attend mandatory training as determined by The Trust in accordance with the Trust policy. RESPONSIBILITIES TO REDUCE RISK:To minimize hazards in the working area and report any identifiable hazards to the line manager. To adhere to all safe systems of work applicable to the work area.To undertake risk assessments and implement risk reducing measures including mini peats and environmental audits. Where appropriate, to review and update safe systems of work on a regular basis. To report to the line manager any residual risks that is unacceptable and not within her/his span of control to rectify. HEALTH AND SAFETY:Maintain a safe environment for patients, staff and personal responsibility as required and is within the trusts Health and Safety and Infection Control policy and Manual Handling policy.To be aware of the Trust Fire Procedure and to attend fire lectures as required.Report and record any untoward incidents and accidents in accordance with the Trust policy.It is the general duty of every employee to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and others including the use of necessary safety devices and protective clothing and co-operate with management in meeting its responsibilities under the Health & Safety at Work Act. Failure to take care or any contravention of safety policy or managerial instructions in this area result in disciplinary action being taken. RESEARCH/AUDIT:Participate and lead in multi professional clinical audit projects assessing clinical effectiveness against determined midwifery standards of care.Participate in clinical research, and know how and where to access the evidence.Disseminate research audit and findings to colleagues, ensuring that the evidence is incorporated into clinical practice where appropriate.Participate /lead in projects The list of responsibilities above, are key primary requirements for the role, however, additional duties may be required to ensure patient and employee safety is met
