Paint Zero develops and produces its own innovative ranges of ultra-low carbon powdered decorating paints, without the petrochemical, plastic or toxic ingredients found in almost all liquid paints.
This position is an apprenticeship opportunity that will include on-site training and 1 day per week term time attendance over 2 years at Wiltshire College, Chippenham to attend a Level 2 Painter and Decorator training course.
The role of lab apprentice at Paint Zero includes a variety of tasks, from measuring pigments for colours, quality assessment of paint batches, preparing customer samples, room set painting and, when required, aiding production on the factory floor. A lab apprentice must be a fast learner who can pick up new machinery and testing equipment quickly, as well as being able to carefully and precisely measure small quantities of material.
Adaptability during each working day is important, so there is a dynamic flow between testing production batches checking results before our products are packaged for customers., A lab technician must wear PPE for most tasks required of them, and compliance with safe procedure and best practice is essential.
To ensure Paint Zero quality each batch requires a number of tests, which the lab apprentice will be responsible for. These may include tests for colour accuracy, viscosity, opacity, adhesion and more. Here the precise use of lab equipment and recording of data is essential, and will be taught through training, however previous laboratory and/or scientific experience is useful.
Computers are used daily in the role, and computer literacy is required in learning new software used in the lab, as well as in data and batch logging. When testing, formulating and correcting colours, a basic knowledge of colour theory is preferred.
