Are you passionate about the environment? Join us and help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for people and wildlife.
The Regulatory Officer role will be based in the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) team within Batteries, WEEE and Shipments, part of Environmental Markets and Regulation. We’re a national team with officers based across England. National travel and overnight stays will be required.
We are looking for professional, enthusiastic people to join our team of Regulatory Officers. You will regulate a range of businesses who operate within in the Producer Responsibility regime. Your job will be to ensure that producers, reprocessors and exporters of waste comply with their responsibilities.
Every day will be different, but you will be:
• Undertake audits (both on site and virtual)
• Take appropriate enforcement action when necessary
• Disrupt non-compliance
• Collate and analyse complex data to help make evidence-based decisions on regulation compliance.
• Handle confidential and sensitive information whilst working within data protection guidelines.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of processes and procedures.
The role is varied, vital and challenging. Being able to work as part of a dispersed team yet be self-motivated and disciplined is a must.
We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities for everyone. We welcome flexible working patterns, including job share.
Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment, making a difference and using environmental regulation to achieve improvements that are significant but not always visible to the general public.
Having an incident role is an essential part of working for the Environment Agency and an active way to support communities and prevent harm to the environment. Further information on incident response can be found within your candidate pack.
The team
The team consists of Regulatory Officers, Senior Technical Officers who lead and support our Regulatory Officers, and Digital Specialists who focus on delivering our digital requirements. The team is friendly, supportive and dedicated.

Experience/skills required
We are looking for people with various types of experience who can demonstrate the capabilities and interpersonal skills needed for the role. Waste industry or regulatory experience is not necessary as you will receive full training. We are looking for people who enjoy working both outdoors and in an office environment. Demonstrating the right behaviours is very important to us. You should be able to show us that you are:
• effective, organised and able to prioritise
• rational/composed
• IT/computer literate
• comfortable with numbers as you will use arithmetic and look at large data sets
• passionate about the environment and willing to learn about environmental regulation/enforcement
And can:
• handle confrontational situations
• adapt your communication style to suit others to get your message across
• integrate into a team
• record information accurately
Don’t be put off applying if you don’t have a degree or similar.
