Activity and structure of the hospital and the department The Trauma and Orthopaedic service to the Coventry district is based at University HospitalsCoventry and Warwickshire situated near Walsgrave on the edge of Coventry centre. It serves apopulation of 900,000 including the area around the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.UHCW became one of the 3 Major Trauma Centres in the West Midlands in April 2012. TheWarwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance is based at UHCW. It is also a tertiary referralcentre for Orthopaedic Trauma, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Plastic Surgery.At the two hospitals no specific number of beds is allocated to any one Consultant, the beds beingshared as necessity demands. There is an Intensive Care/High Dependency Unit with 30 beds atUHCW. There are 79 orthopaedic beds at UH and 41 at the Hospital of St Cross, Rugby.At UHCW there are 27 operating theatres in all, 22 in the main theatre block, including 3 laminar flowtheatres for Orthopaedics and 5 in the Day Surgery Unit. At St Cross there are 5 Theatres; three withlaminar flow and 2 other theatres predominantly used by Orthopaedics.There is a very active teaching programme. In addition, the department runs daily trauma meetings,lunchtime meetings and a formal teaching afternoon for all orthopaedic staff and students onalternate Wednesday afternoons, although this is not consistently required.
