GP Assistant Job Description JOB TITLE: GP Assistant REPORTS TO: Lead Nurse/Practice Manager Job Summary Working as part of our primary care team, the GP Assistant will provide both clinical healthcare support and administrative assistance. This role combines traditional healthcare assistant duties with practice administration, working under appropriate supervision and strictly in accordance with practice protocols and guidelines. Clinical Responsibilities Phlebotomy services including near patient testing for INR, blood glucose, and cholesterol monitoring Vital signs monitoring - measuring and recording blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and weight, reporting abnormal readings using practice protocols NHS Health Checks and long-term condition monitoring appointments Wound care including dressing changes and basic wound assessment Chronic disease support - supporting diabetes, COPD, and hypertension clinics Vaccination administration following appropriate training and competency assessment ECGs and other basic diagnostic procedures as trained Chaperoning services when requested by clinicians Clinical area management - preparing, maintaining and restocking treatment rooms to national cleanliness standards Administrative Responsibilities Patient registration and demographic data management Appointment coordination and diary management support Referral processing - managing outgoing referrals and tracking responses Data entry and coding - accurate contemporaneous record keeping using appropriate templates and read codes QOF data recording and extraction for quality improvement Insurance reports and administrative documentation Correspondence management - processing letters, results, and communications Stock ordering and inventory management for clinical supplies Reception support during busy periods or staff absence Information Management Maintain accurate, contemporaneous patient records using SystemOne (training provided) Ensure all patient contact is properly documented with appropriate read coding Support QOF data collection and practice performance monitoring Process test results and communicate outcomes according to practice protocols Communication and Team Working Professional communication with patients, families, and healthcare colleagues Liaise effectively between clinical and administrative teams Report significant patient issues immediately to appropriate clinician Participate actively in team meetings and practice development Professional Development Participate in annual individual performance review Complete mandatory training modules annually Maintain CPD portfolio and competency assessments Take responsibility for own professional development Support and mentor new team members as appropriate Health and Safety Comply with all practice health and safety policies Maintain infection control standards at all times Report incidents and near misses appropriately Ensure safe handling and disposal of clinical waste Key Requirements No clinical task undertaken without full training and competency assessment Strict adherence to practice protocols and clinical governance frameworks Maintain patient confidentiality and data protection compliance Flexible approach to varying workloads and practice needs This role offers excellent opportunities for professional development within primary care, with comprehensive training and support provided for all aspects of the position.
