As the Lead School Nurse, you will provide leadership and clinical supervision for members of the School Health Team, supporting children and young people with complex health needs, while working in partnership with their families. Duties and Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities Adheres to the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) Standards of Conduct, Performance and Ethics for nurses and midwives always. Maintains clear and identified professional boundaries at all times. Provides a high quality of direct care, as evidenced by clinical audit, placing the child/young person and their families at the centre of all planning. Act as a role model for other members of the team, disseminating their skills as appropriate. Ensure the safe custody and administration of medication and reports any discrepancies. Demonstrate competence in the full set of clinical nursing skills, as required of role. Utilise evidence-based practice and research, to inform care treatments that lead to the desired outcomes for children. Involved in the audit process and suggest necessary changes in line with clinical audit; positively assist with implementation. Plan, implement and evaluate nursing interventions and health promotional developments within The Childrens Trust School, in liaison with the Multidisciplinary Team. Work without direct supervision; responsible for the management of own workload. Lead The Childrens Trust immunisation programme, as required. Ensure adequate medical supplies are available for the day students and adhere to safe storage of these at all times. Take ownership of and lead The Childrens Trust Schools Health Promotion Programme, ensuring all children and young people have equal access. Organisational Skills Report, collect and collate data using IT. Delegate to team members, as per The Childrens Trust Delegation Policy and NMC guidelines. Manage time effectively, ensuring appropriate and effective prioritisation of workload. In line with The Childrens Trust Complaints Policy and the Duty of Candour, manage both informal and formal complaints (if and when they occur) taking immediate action if appropriate and liaising with the Multidisciplinary Team as required. Professional Development Successfully identify future development needs of self and the team, including external study opportunities. Appropriately prepare for Performance & Development Reviews, identifying learning objectives and setting targets; identify opportunities for professional development, in order to meet PREP requirements, including Supervision and Mandatory Training. Read and implement all policies, procedures and risk assessments, pertinent to working practice and keep up to date with policy changes as they occur. Ensure that practice delivery is evidence based. Actively participate in local clinical governance activities. Leadership Work collaboratively with colleagues across the organisation, particularly within the education, medical and therapy teams, in order to provide effective care. Provide clinical supervision and support to Registered Nurses, Care staff, Specialist Teaching Assistants and Nursing students. Maintain clinical and regulatory standards and document clear evidence to satisfy the identified regulatory bodies. Carry out Staff Personal & Development Reviews. Training & Support Participate in the clinical development and teaching of Registered Nurses, Care staff, Specialist Teaching Assistants and Nursing students. Participate in in-service competency training programmes and teaching sessions, as appropriate. Attend mandatory training, as directed by Line Manager, to ensure underpinning knowledge, skills and competencies are maintained and further developed, in order to carry out the role effectively. Communication Communicate effectively with children/young people (applying the principles of consistent communication). Communicate professionally with families and members of the Multidisciplinary Team. Recognise barriers to effective communication and be able to reduce these as appropriate. Communicate regularly and effectively with the Headteacher, or their deputy. Maintain clear and concise documents and care records, in accordance with The Childrens Trust Policy and in line with NMC guidelines. Ensure documents are managed confidentially at all times. Attend and/or Chair regular meetings with the Multidisciplinary Team to discuss individual children/young people and the service in general. Develop and promote relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. Professionalism Takes action and raises concerns. Adhere to the policies and procedures of The Childrens Trust. Provide evidence of all vaccinations (or medical exemption) required for the post. Adhere to manual handling procedures and complete mandatory manual handling training. Promotes the health and safety of others. Uses the incident reporting and risk assessment system (IRAR), to identify and report risks and incidents/actions if directed. Responsible for identifying and mitigating risk within the work environment.
