Would you like to be part of our friendly, welcoming Highways Team, proud to review all aspects of the highway network in and around Harrogate District and the North Yorkshire Dales?
We are looking for a Highway Officer to join our Area 6 team, based in Boroughbridge, which delivers highway services across the entire Harrogate District.
This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals looking to develop their career in the highways and transport sector, working as part of an established and effective team.
The Team
The Highways Operations Unit is responsible for the delivery and management of key highway services across the local network. Their responsibilities include:
· Implementing highway improvement and maintenance schemes
· Conducting routine highway maintenance activities
· Delivering winter maintenance services
· Managing the local highway network
· Liaising with the public and councillors at a local level
The team operates under the guidance of the Highway Safety Inspection Manual (April 2023), which ensures a consistent countywide approach to inspections, defect recording, and response protocols.
The Role
As a Highway Officer, you will play a vital front-line role in maintaining the safety and integrity of the highway network. Key responsibilities include:
· Assisting the Maintenance Manager in overseeing client activities related to highway safety and legal compliance under the Highways Act 1980
· Conducting safety inspections of the highway network
· Raising works orders for maintenance contractors
· Maintaining accurate computer records of inspections and actions
· Reviewing third-party insurance claims related to highway incidents
· Evaluating and responding to customer and councillor requests or complaints through on-site assessments
· Identifying streets requiring higher levels of intervention for future capital funding consideration
· Participating in winter maintenance inspection and supervision, including out-of-hours work on a rota basis (additional payment and training provided)
This role involves a significant amount of remote work using a highways vehicle as a mobile workstation.
What You Will Bring
Candidates will have a strong understanding of highway safety and maintenance procedures as well as familiarity with the Highways Act 1980 and local council duties. If you are dedicated to ensuring highway safety is always the top priority and have the following skills, we’d love to hear from you!
· Ability to work independently and as part of a team
· Competence in using digital systems to record inspections and manage data
· Observant and detail-oriented approach to inspections and reporting
· Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure
· Proficiency in budgetary planning, monitoring, and control
· Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to engage effectively with the public
· A clear understanding of political processes and awareness of the public sector environment
It is important that candidates are willing to work flexible hours, including out-of-hours winter maintenance duties (additional payment and training is provided).
